We had Kellen's one year check with his cardiologist and everything is status quo. The big news is we scheduled his diagnostic test called a esophageal electrophysiological procedure. Yeah that's what I said ... a what? Dr. Anderson repeated it a couple of times and I had no clue what he was saying until I came home and looked at the American Heart Association's website. This is their definition:
In this procedure, a thin, soft, flexible plastic tube is inserted into the nostril and positioned in the esophagus (since the esophagus is closer to heart’s upper chambers i.e., atria) and an ECG is recorded. An electric stimulator could be used to make the heart beat faster and detect the signals of arrhythmia.
So today will be Kellen's last day of medication before the procedure. They want it completely out of his system so they can test his heart in its normal, unmedicated state. Then on Thursday, we have to be at Sacred Heart Children's Hospital by 6:30 in the morning after 8 hours of fasting. Thankfully, it will be 8 hours at night, but once we get there and check-in, it could be another two hours before they start. I'm hoping he stays calm when he realizes there's no breakfast coming! After they take him and sedate him, it should only be 30-45 minutes until they're done. From what I gather, they will try to shock his heart into SVT, which allows them to detect where the extra tissue is located in Kellen's heart and how dangerous it is. Only 1% of those with WPW actually have the potential to go into a deadly arrhythmia and through this test they should be able to tell if he's at risk.
It seems to be a pretty standard procedure and one his doctor has done many times without any serious complications. And more importantly, my God is in control.
But I am still his mother and I can't escape a little anxiety. I've grown comfortable with the medication and how it protects him from SVT. I'm a little scared by the five days without it. I'm a little scared of my one year old being sedated. And I'm a little scared about what the results could be. So, I ask for prayer for Kellen, for me, for the doctor, and for the results. Thank you so much for your support.
