Saturday, we celebrated Kellen's birthday with family and friends in true red, white, and blue style. I had a lot of fun decorating the tables and desserts. One of my favorite finds was Valentine's peanut M&Ms at Target for 50% off! I saved all the pink ones for snacking later and had a great red and white filler for my centerpieces.
For dessert, we had funfetti cupcakes with a blueberry topping and my infamous "Shower Dessert." Those of you who have had it, know what I'm talking about =) It was the perfect color to fit in with my theme so it only made sense to break it out for a birthday.
Kellen has been a slow learner when it comes to eating "real food" without gagging, so he hasn't had much yet. For his birthday dinner, we made barbecue pulled pork and pulled chicken and I tried to give him some, not expecting much. He loved it! He screamed for more in between every bite.
As some of you saw on facebook, I really wanted to buy a George Washington wig to complete the atmosphere, but decided to save money. Instead, I found a two dollar plastic skimmer hat like what you'd see in a barbershop quartet! He played with it instead of wearing it, but it was still totally worth it.
He was very curious about the fire when the cupcakes came out
and of course tried to grab one right away.
I caught his reaction when Mimi moved it out of reach ... a high pitched shriek =)
After the obligatory birthday song, he got his long anticipated cupcake and ... did nothing! He was very skeptical of the sticky frosting and poked and prodded it with a face of disgust. I was laughing so hard because both of his brothers demolished their first birthday cake! It fits Kellen's personality that he would be the suspicious one.
With some help, he discovered it tasted pretty good,
but he still didn't finish the whole thing.
Messy Birthday Boy
All good parties have an outfit change or two, so Kellen retired to his bedroom for some cupcake-free clothes and we finished the party with presents.
I couldn't get pictures with everyone there because it was already eight and he was definitely starting to get cranky, but I did get a few good ones.
Aaron and Bonnie: our best friends in Idaho!! They have become a huge part of our lives in an amazingly short time. This picture tells a lot =)
Right before bed, we tried one more shot with the birthday boy. It turned out to be my favorite.
