Houdini

Let me just say this is a story that will go down in the Anderson Family annals . . .

Friday night started out uneventful. GG (great grandma) sent Valentine's cards for the boys with money for a "sweet treat" so I took the boys to Starbucks (where else??) while Landon caught up on some homework. Trenton chose the double chocolate cupcake; he is definitely my child!

And I chose a good ole' chocolate chip cookie for Sawyer. Here he is saying his trademark "ooooo" that usually means "I see food."

It was a nice little date with my two boys, but we were definitely out pretty late. Right when we got home, Sawyer went to bed. Despite the fact that it was already nine, Landon and I kept up our bedtime ritual of reading Trenton a story each. After two books on the top bunk and jumping off into dad's arms (he doesn't catch me as well for some reason . . .) we started to leave the room.

Problem: the door was closed and locked.

If you remember from an earlier post, I had changed around the doorknob so the lock was on the OUTSIDE of the door. Hmmmm

We still have no clue how it happened, but suddenly we were in trouble. We already knew every door and window was locked and we had never thought to hide a key anywhere so we were literally locked out of our own house. Landon decides he's going to walk six miles round trip to Scott and Amber's in his gym shorts and bare feet to use their phone and call a locksmith. Looking back, I'm not sure why we jumped to that first instead of trying a neighbor - maybe because it was 9:30 and people might be sleeping . . . it's hard problem solving logically when you're in the middle of the situation.

Anyway, he jumps out the window and starts walking and I'm faced with a good hour stuck in Trenton's room. I decide to start scouring the room for something to pick the lock and come upon this metal case of DVDs I bought on a whim at Berean's closing sale (thanks for finding it Melissa!)

There used to be a black handle attached to those holes you see on the front. Yup, that's right, I tore the handle off and picked off the metal clips that held it in place. They were too thick to bend by hand, so I used Trenton's hard cover books to bend it as straight as possible and shoved that little sucker in the door knob. A few minutes of jiggling and we were free!!

I ran out the front door to catch Landon before he got too far and Trenton ran right out with me, giggling and yelling "Mommy opened it, mommy opened it." Thank goodness I bought that case and thank goodness it was sitting in Trenton's bedroom instead of the playroom. Add this to the list of things that can happen when you have kids!! Needless to say, we will now keep a key taped above the door in his room =)
